The proliferation of digital devices has introduced new challenges to visual health. Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, affects individuals who spend extended periods working on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Symptoms include eye fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes. The condition results from reduced blink rate during screen use, typically decreasing from 15-20 blinks per minute to only 5-7 blinks. Blue light exposure from digital screens has raised concerns about potential retinal damage and sleep disruption. Optometrists now incorporate specific testing for digital eye strain and may prescribe computer-specific eyewear with anti-reflective coatings and blue light filtering. The 20-20-20 rule—taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes to view something 20 feet away—is widely recommended to alleviate symptoms.
